Start your career in healthcare with CVTC’s new fast, affordable Lab Assistant technical diploma! In this crucial profession, you will collect and prepare critical medical samples and communicate information to patients and providers.

Get hands-on experience with laboratory equipment, learn medical terminology, and study safety procedures. In only one semester, you will gain experience receiving, examining, and analyzing specimens in a laboratory, capturing data, and coordinating the distribution of results for both client and healthcare requests.

Note: To gain employment, a high school diploma or GED and a criminal background check will be required by the employer.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Students entering health programs at CVTC should understand the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDs, through saliva and blood with direct patient care as part of their education.

This exposure can be minimized or eliminated using a combination of engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, training, medical surveillance, Hepatitis B vaccination, signs and labels, and other provisions.

All programs at CVTC comply with local, state, and federal infection control policies, including the use of standard precautions as stipulated by current CDC guidelines. Written policies and instructions on infection control protocol to minimize the risk of disease transmission is provided throughout the courses in the curriculum. Compliance of safety practices is evaluated throughout the students' clinical experiences to ensure a safe educational environment.

Sample Courses

Basic Lab Skills
This course explores health career options and the principles and procedures of basic tests performed in the clinical laboratory. You will utilize medical terminology and general laboratory equipment. You will follow required safety and infection control procedures and perform simple laboratory tests.

Phlebotomy
This course provides opportunities for leaners to perform routine venipuncture, routine capillary puncture, and special collection procedures. The student must be 18 years old to register for this course.
